DERBY ARONA TENERIFE ONE LOFT RACE
The final pre-selection training flights of 2020 – Training races 4 & 5
On the island of Tenerife, the Arona team are making steady progress with the preselection training programme as they move the liberations further north to the designated 15 klm liberation site with the 2,129 pigeons which have successfully overcome the previous training flights basketed.
With Abel Ledesma in control and after allowing the pigeons a period of time to settle after the journey he was able to get them away a little earlier than advertised due to the forecast of unsettled weather over the next few hours which was moving west from the neighboring islands so the issue was to get the birds in the air and home prior to the rain, was the most important issue for the team.
With the confirmation of the liberation at 10.45 into broken skies and the pigeons orientating the liberation site, everyone was set to await the leading pigeons.
Following a period of time with eyes peeled around the loft the first small batch of pigeons was visible for all to see landing taking top honors of 1st international Training 4 with a flying time of twenty five minutes we head to Hungary and team Fenyvesi, Balazs & Norbert, with pigeon 610 recording its arrival on 11,10.19.70, team England take a close 2nd with pigeon il be back entered by team W & S Sweet coming in on 22.214.171.124 just ahead of a second arrival for team England as pigeon named wind entered by andy Harker in 3rd on 11.10.59.05,team van der mass from Belgium entry bran timed in on 11.10.59 .10 for 4th international, for 5th place we go back to the winning nation of Hungary with team Horvath and pigeon horesz 35 coming in on 11.10.59 50,team Belgium take 6th as derby Arona coordinators Jacky and jelle Creemers entry carlito records its arrival on 126.96.36.199, holding off team f.b.i also from begum into 7th with their entry f.b.i.2 timing in at 11.11.00.50, Hendrik Wilpers from Germany takes the 8th position with pigeon arruga on 11.11.00.95 9th goes to local fanciers from Tenerife team columbacanaria on 11.11.01.75 with their pigeon sniper, leaving team de bruin bv from the Netherlands to finalize today’s top 10 with their entry akbar on a time of 11.11.02.05
With the distance now becoming much greater by each flight encountered the pigeons are starting to arrive at the lofts in smaller batches, which is god to see as they’re now using their own ability to adapt to the Tenerife terrain and return home.
With large numbers now arriving and the trapping area being engulfed in pigeons the clock needed to work overtime to formulate a result as over 1,700 pigeons made the journey back within the first ten minutes of the winning pigeons, with some 400 still to record their arrival, it’s at this stage in the training we will experience intervals within the returns as its believed the pigeons line will come through the local peregrine population which may well force them wide of their direct route.
As the afternoon went on the clock indicated the majority of the pigeons liberated were safely back at the loft as the numbers increased and a s result as the light faded some twenty or so pigeons were still adrift with he arrival of four more returning on day two this brought the returns percentage to a satisfactory 2113 pigeons 99.24%
28th of December and due to constant work within the loft by the loft team along with the fortune of some fine canarian weather the team are pleased to have reached the final training event of the pre activation training programme with 2113 pigeons basketed for the 20 klm flight.
With the birds basketed and duly on route northwards and following a period of time to settle, Abel again in charge cut the strings to release the convoy at 11.45 into a broken blue sky a light northerly breeze with temperatures rising to a moderate 21 degrees.

With the leaders safely fed and perched and with the clock ticking away sowing 1,800 returnees it was clear to see that at sometime during the route, the pigeons had been struck by birds of prey which had resulted in them beng well split, at the time the livestream had closed there was still some 300 plus pigeons adrift, most of which 2,057 0f the 2113 had thankfully made it through unscathed but still as night fell on the island, eighty or so were still experiencing a night under the stars.
Day 2 and with yet another good forecast over the canaries from early morning the team were pleased to see some of yesterdays missing pigeons, coming through with pigeon biuty for team Arthur Gasiorowski of Poland being the first to pitch shortly after 07.20 which seemed to be the start of a steady flow of pigeons coming in prior to lunch time which increased the numbers to 2,067,with the odd one or two additional returnees over day 3 and 4 the final numbers showed a 97.9 %
